Queensland Zero Emission Vehicle Rebate Scheme

The Queensland Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Rebate Scheme may be of interest if you're planning to purchase a new electric vehicle.

What is it?

The Queensland Government is providing a rebate of $3,000 for eligible new ZEVs purchased from 16 March 2021. Notably, there will be an enhanced rebate scheme available from mid-July 2023, where eligible applicants can apply for a rebate of up to $6,000 for new EVs costing $68,000 or less. A ZEV refers to a full battery electric vehicle (BEV) only.

This enhanced scheme targets households with an annual income of $180,000 or less. Queenslanders exceeding this income threshold can still apply for a $3,000 rebate. This scheme is open to both Queensland individuals and businesses. Each individual is entitled to one rebate, and each Queensland business can receive up to five rebates per financial year.

The intention of the ZEV Rebate Scheme is to incentivise individuals and businesses across Queensland to purchase ZEVs rather than internal combustion engine vehicles.

To be eligible, you must be a Queensland resident with a valid Queensland driver's license or a registered Queensland business. The ZEVs should be brand new, purchased in Queensland from a licensed motor vehicle dealer and registered with the Department of Transport of Main Roads on or after 16 March 2022. The dutiable value of the ZEV must be up to $58,000 (including GST).

It's important to note that certain vehicles and entities are ineligible for the rebate, including internal combustion engine and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, second-hand vehicles, dealer models, heavy vehicles over 4.5 tonne, and more.

When clients are ready to apply, they will need to submit the following documents:

  • Valid and current Queensland Driver Licence
  • Evidence of residential address
  • Copy of Medicare card or Passport
  • Vehicle registration certificate
  • Proof of purchase
  • Copy of your bank statement showing name, BSB, and account number for the transfer of the rebate

If they are applying as a business, additional documents are required, including an Australian Business Number (ABN), Australian Company Number (ACN), company name, address, contact details, evidence of business address, director contact name and date of birth, business contact person name, mailing address, and contact details.

To complete the application, you will also need to provide certain vehicle details including the date of first registration, sale price, duty amount paid, registration number plate, vehicle make and model, and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).

This is a fantastic opportunity to make the switch to a zero-emission vehicle more affordable.
