Stephen Baxter Director
I have recently joined Mazars to lead the Australian Indirect Tax Division.
For many businesses, indirect taxes are a mysterious and confusing world. With 33 years’ experience in multiple taxes within the indirect tax field, I am well equipped to help clients understand where they have liabilities and also where opportunities for exemptions and credits can be taken.
I specialise in GST planning and transaction advice for the property sector as well as land tax dispute and planning advice for developers, investors and family property portfolios. In addition to having assisted clients implement whole of business GST systems in Australia, I enable non-residents to establish streamlined GST compliance systems in Australia where required. My experience includes preparing the first fuel tax credit claims for multiple Federal, State and Local government agencies and I continue to provide fuel tax credits advice and claims assistance for clients in the transport and construction industries.
I have been at the forefront of the development of indirect taxes in Australia with my membership of the Federal Treasurer’s Board of Taxation Advisory Panel since 2008.
My background includes a senior role at a Big Four firm where I lead projects to implement tax systems for state government authorities and delivered planning strategies to reduce indirect tax costs for manufacturers, importers and wholesalers.
I also write and update the GST chapters for Wolters Kluwer Small Business Tax Concessions Guide.
Recently, in 2019, I represented a client as Advocate in a successful Administrative Appeal Tribunal challenge to an ATO GST assessment.
